FAQ

Questions about SBA loans.

What credit score do you need for an SBA loan?

Most SBA lenders want 680+ personal credit score. Some go down to 650 with strong business financials. The SBA doesn't set a minimum score — each lender sets their own. Business credit (PayDex, SBSS) also matters. We've seen 650-680 scores approved with strong cash flow and collateral.

What's the difference between SBA 7(a) and 504 loans?

SBA 7(a): general purpose up to $5M, 10-25 year terms, bank lends directly with SBA guarantee. SBA 504: real estate/equipment only up to $5.5M, 10-25 year fixed rates, 50% bank/40% CDC/10% borrower equity. 504 is for fixed assets only; 7(a) is general purpose.

How long does SBA loan approval take?

Standard 7(a): 45-90 days. SBA Express: 36 hours for approval (funding in 7-14 days). 504 loans: 60-90 days. Timeline depends on lender, completeness of application, and loan complexity.

Do I need collateral for an SBA loan?

Collateral required for 7(a) loans over $350K (to extent available). 504 loans: the financed asset is collateral. SBA doesn't decline solely for lack of collateral if cash flow supports repayment. Personal guarantee required from all 20%+ owners regardless.

Can a startup get an SBA loan?

Yes, but harder. SBA Microloan program (up to $50K) is designed for startups. Standard 7(a) requires 2+ years in business typically. Some lenders do 7(a) for startups with strong business plan, industry experience, 20-30% equity injection, and projections. SBA Express may be more accessible.
